The Alchemist Book Cover Redesign

I strayed away from focusing the cover on the desert setting in the book and instead looked at an even larger aspect of the book. The entirety of the journey—from his beginnings as a shepherd in Andalusia heading across the sea, before traversing the desert seemed the most meaningful. He is ultimately made up of these experiences and so the figure itself holds all these colours within him.

Witnessing the fighting hawks are an important moment in the story so I've incorporated the hawks in the distant dunes. If you don't look for them, you may miss them. This mirrors the story in how the character only starts to see omens begins to tune into his intuition.

This illustration was created by mixing traditional and digital techniques. The illustration was done in watercolour first and then I brought it into Photoshop to colour digitally.

I recognize the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations people as the stewards of the territory and land in which I live, learn, and work. I aim to be mindful of the space and resources I take up as a second generation settler and am actively learning about decolonization and how to put it into practice.
